Why You Should Join a Master's Swim Team
Why You Should Join a Master’s Swim Team
Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned triathlete, I’m now convinced that joining a Master’s swim team can offer a wealth of benefits from accountability and motivation to learning new skills. I speak from experience here. Here’s why being part of a Master’s group could be one of the best decisions for your swimming journey.
1. Push Yourself Harder
Swimming with a group creates a sense of friendly competition. You’re more likely to push your limits when you’re pacing alongside teammates or trying to keep up with faster swimmers. I don’t know about you, but when I go to the pool alone, I won’t push nearly as hard as I do when I am swimming next to other athletes. Masters Swimming is a great way to break through performance plateaus and improve your speed and endurance.
2. Coaching Makes a Difference
When you have a coach pacing up and down the pool deck, the level of focus increases. Coaches provide structure to the workout, ensuring you’re not just swimming laps aimlessly. They design sessions to target endurance, speed, and technique, making every minute in the pool count. Coached workouts are taken more seriously than swimming alone. It’s just the way it is.
3. Accountability and Motivation
It’s easy to skip solo swim sessions, but when you’re part of a group, there’s built-in accountability. Knowing that others are counting on you to show up can make all the difference on days when motivation is low. Having a set schedule for team practices helps establish a consistent routine. Regular attendance builds discipline, improves fitness, and ensures steady progress over time. Even when you miss a workout for whatever reason, chances are you someone will ask why you missed.
4. Improved Technique
A coach is constantly watching your form and technique, offering advice to help you swim more efficiently. Your coach is standing on the pool deck watching you glide through the water for a full hour, so take advantage of their knowledge and helpful tips for better swim form and economy. Small tweaks in your stroke, body position, or breathing can lead to significant improvements in speed and endurance.
5. Structured Workouts
Master’s swim teams follow planned workouts that cater to different skill levels. Instead of swimming the same freestyle every time, you’ll benefit from varied sets, including intervals, drills, and endurance training. Team workouts introduce variety and keep things interesting. Master’s teams often incorporate drills and skills you might not practice on your own, such as starts, turns, and underwater work. These can significantly improve your overall performance. One thing I found beneficial was swimming all 4 strokes regularly because you are engaging different muscle groups and therefore getting a better workout. Structured yet varied sessions are designed to improve all aspects of your swimming.
6. Build a Sense of Community
Joining a Master’s swim team isn’t just about swimming – it’s about being part of a like-minded community. The camaraderie, encouragement, and shared experiences create a deep sense of belonging. Many teams also organize social events, making it a great way to make new friends. The combination of physical exercise, social interaction, and a supportive environment is an overall positive experience.
7. Access to Resources
Many Master’s swim teams are affiliated with facilities that offer additional resources, such as a gym for strength training equipment, recovery tools, and access to other fitness classes. A good example is the YMCA. Being part of a team might also provide opportunities to compete in local or national swim meets.
8. Goal Setting and Progress Tracking
Whether your goal is to improve your 100-meter time or simply swim a mile without stopping, a Master’s swim team provides the structure and support to help you achieve it. I went from a 1:45 all out 100 freestyle to a 1:25 when our coach had us do a time trial after a few months of practicing together. A coach will always celebrate milestones with you and encourage you to aim higher.
9. Cross-Training for Other Sports
If you’re a triathlete or participate in other endurance sports, swimming with a Master’s team is excellent cross-training. It improves cardiovascular fitness, builds upper body strength, and reduces the impact on your joints compared to running or cycling. I often suggest to an athlete with a running injury to increase their time in the pool to sustain their cardio they have built up from running and cycling.
Joining a Master’s swim team can transform your swimming experience, making it more productive, enjoyable, and rewarding. The fastest race times I ever had in my triathlon career were when I was practicing with a Master’s group. The benefits extend far beyond the pool.
